Sisonke Xonti is a celebrated South African jazz saxophonist, composer, and bandleader. Originally from Cape Town, he relocated to Johannesburg where he deeply immersed himself in the local jazz scene, collaborating with esteemed artists like Nduduzo Makhathini, Abdullah Ibrahim, Hugh Masekela, Herbie Tsoaeli, and Zim Ngqawana. 

6 years later, Sisonke is back with a powerfull album ‘”uKholo” supported by the solid Shane Cooper on double bass, Yonela Mnana on piano and vocals, Ayanda Sikade on drums, Keenan Ahrends on guitar, and Gontse Makhene on percussion. The album opens with" Khanya (Prayer)", featuring Mandisi Dyantyis —a piece that immediately signals a more mature direction to Sisonke's debut on As-Shams. Between jazz and spiritual jazz, this album will soon become a benchmark in South African jazz history.

This album from Voom Voom Records showcases masterful arrangements, inventive rhythms, and rich harmonies, featuring a perfect balance of flute and saxophone interplay. Genres of Funk, Jazz, Gospel, Afro, and traditional elements merge seamlessly into something truly unique and timeless.

The LP offers a varied experience with numerous influences, providing twists and turns throughout. It’s fun and sports a bold mix, with wide panning and rhythm guitar that exists in its own distinct world.

For me, the standout track is Sigodukeni; I love the drum and percussion break—it evokes the spirit of the Equals at times. I’ve noticed that your record shop, Juno, stocks your releases in the UK, so I'll be sure to purchase this vinyl when it's back in stock over here. Thanks!

He will perform 6 gigs in Cape Town with Jason Realon (Organ) & Marlon Witbooi (Drum) and conduct a masterclass at The Queen's Lounge.
